What is the difference between Hadith and Athar? Aal Moalim, March 12, 2024March 12, 2024 The term Athar (also Khabar) refers to narrations attributed to the Prophet as well as narrations attributed to others besides the Prophet, such as companions and their students. These narrations encompass statements, actions, approvals, and descriptions. This concept has been expressed in Arabic as “What has been ascribed to the Prophet, peace be upon him, or others in terms of statements, deeds, affirmations, or portrayals.” Many early Muslim scholars used this term in this way, including Al Tabari, author of Tahdheeb Al Aathaar, and Al Tahawi, author of Sharh Ma’ani Al Aathaar. However, some scholars restricted the term Athar only to narrations from non-Prophet narrators like companions and their students, while using the term Hadith specifically for narrations attributed to the Prophet himself regarding his statements, actions, approvals, and descriptions.
